Overview
After a stunning £36M redevelopment and expansion University of Southampton wanted an impactful signage system and graphics that would help their customers discover the ‘world of fitness possibilities’ in the new centre. The revamp included new state-of-the-art equipment, access to a variety of classes with expert instructors and some great new facilities including a climbing wall and café.
They also wanted the centre to be community focussed so they could continue supporting the Southampton community and promoting a healthy and active lifestyle for everyone.
Bringing the outside in
Situated near a nature park on the leafy campus of the University, using a simple, natural colour palette helps to enhance that connection to nature. It also creates a calming as well as focussed atmosphere and helps to support visitors mental and physical well-being.
Lush Imagery
For the communal spaces, a more impactful approach was embraced by incorporating large-scale imagery of lush, leafy foliage. This natural imagery transformed the environment into a more inviting and vibrant space. By bringing the calming essence of nature indoors, the design promotes a serene and welcoming atmosphere. The leafy visuals not only enhance aesthetic appeal but also provide a soothing contrast to the active areas, helping balance the overall ambiance of the centre.
A Versatile Design
In areas that are dedicated to physical activities, a simple, focussed approach was applied where simple, bright natural colours were adopted, incorporating bold ‘Active for All’ brand messaging. The neutral colours enhance the flexibility and versatility of the spaces allowing for differing uses that can evolve over time if needed.
