You don’t have to be active to have something to say.

Whether you love your weekly swim, haven’t been to a gym in years or have never felt it was for you, your experience matters.

Tell us how it feels.

We’re researching what holds people back from being more active – the barriers that get in the way of good, regular exercise.

Help us see the full picture.

We work with sport and leisure organisations across the UK. Your insight will help us understand how to get more people, more active, more often.

Leave something growing.

With just 1 minute of your time, you can make a real difference with something that will continue to grow for years to come.

About you

Which best describes you right now?

This helps us understand where you are in relation to gym and leisure-centre activity.

When you finish, your answers will be saved by Bigwave for this research. We do not ask for your name or email. Please do not include identifying details in your written answer. Privacy policy (opens in a new tab).

Current behaviour

Outside of a gym, swim or exercise class, how do you currently stay active?

Select anything you have done in the last six months.

Your experience

What made you start, and what keeps you coming back?

This gives us a useful comparison against the barriers people who do not currently attend describe.

What originally made you start attending?
What most helps you keep coming back?
Baseline intent

How likely are you to use a gym or leisure centre in the next six months?

We ask this before showing you any ideas, so we can measure whether anything later changes your view.

1 – definitely would not510 – definitely would
First reaction

Imagine walking into a gym you have never visited before. What might you feel?

Choose up to three. This is asked before we show any list of barriers.

Identity

Does a gym feel like a place for someone like you?

Rate each statement from strongly disagree to strongly agree.

I do not really think of myself as a “gym person”.
I would worry that I would stand out.
It sometimes feels as though you need to already be fit before joining.
I believe exercise in a gym could work for someone like me.
Intimidation

How much would these things concern you?

Think about a first visit to a gym or leisure centre.

Not knowing how the equipment works.
Not knowing where to go or what happens next.
Doing an exercise incorrectly.
Not being fit enough to start.
Having to ask someone for help.
Exposure

How much would being seen or judged concern you?

Exercising while other people can see me.
People judging my body or fitness level.
Looking inexperienced.
Entering a busy gym alone.
Receiving unwanted attention or comments.
Capacity

When activity does not happen, what is going on underneath?

Rate how often each statement feels true for you.

I genuinely do not have enough time.
I feel too mentally or physically tired to face it.
Other people or responsibilities need my time first.
I tell myself I will start when life is quieter.
Getting ready, travelling and starting can feel like too much effort.
Psychological safety

What would make a first visit feel easier?

Choose the three things that would help you most.

What are you reaching for?

If being more active worked for you, what would you want it to give you?

Choose up to three.

Please choose no more than three.
Concept test

Imagine a leisure centre offered this:

Your first visit does not need to be a workout.

Come in, have a five-minute look around, meet someone at reception and leave whenever you want. No pressure to join. No expectation to exercise.

How much more or less likely would this make you to visit?

Much less likelyNo differenceMuch more likely
The smallest next step

Which of these could you genuinely imagine doing in the next 30 days?

In your own words

What would need to change for a gym or leisure centre to feel more like a place for you?

Thank you for completing this survey

Good for understanding people. A little good for the planet.

You share your view. We use the insight to better understand barriers to activity. And we plant a tree on your behalf.

Your tree will be planted with the Eden Reforestation project via the Billion Trees Project.

About the Billion Trees Project (opens in a new tab)

A few things
you might
want to know.

Do I need to use a gym to take part?

No. We want to hear from people who exercise regularly, people who used to, and people who have never felt a gym or leisure centre was for them. Your answers will guide which questions you see.

How long does it take?

Set aside a few minutes. The number of questions depends on your experience, and the progress bar shows where you are. Most answers are a simple selection or rating; the final written answer is optional.

Will you ask for my name or email?

No. You don’t need an account, and the survey doesn’t ask for contact details. Please avoid adding information that could identify you or someone else in your written answer. Read our privacy policy (opens in a new tab).

Who’s behind the research?

We’re Bigwave Marketing. We work with sport and leisure organisations and want to better understand what helps people become more active, and what gets in their way.

How does the tree pledge work?

Complete and submit the survey, and we’ll plant a tree on your behalf through the Eden Reforestation project via the Billion Trees Project. There’s no separate sign-up or payment for you to make.
