Diving Straight in with Rutland Swim Academy
Rutland Swim Academy’s journey to achieving business growth with Bigwave’s Insight360 programme
Katie Dennis, owner of Rutland Swim Academy, wanted to understand the best way to grow her business and move to a position where she was less caught up in the day-to-day running of the business and more focused on working towards her long-term goals. As a Sole Trader, Katie found it challenging to see her next move.

Our Solution
Identify, Examine and Improvement
By gaining a full understanding of the true current state of the business, Bigwave was able to identify, examine, and prioritise key opportunities for improvement and discuss a wide range of options through the full Insight360 Business Assessment Report. We then started on the implementation of the ideas through regular support and monthly Zoom sessions with Bigwave’s experienced Business Coach, Nick Masson, alongside access to the wider experience and knowledge of the Bigwave Team.
I first met Nick in September 2019 at the Swim Teachers Conference when he gave a talk to an audience of swim school owners, and I liked some of his ideas and suggestions. I approached him after his talk, and we agreed to chat to see if my swim school could be improved. We met in October to discuss some of the ideas to improve the swim school. I’m a sole trader and what I appreciated about Nick is that he takes a personal approach to my business, so he’s helping me develop both as an owner and on a personal professional level. He encouraged me to look at my own skills and see where I could develop my career and through that route improve my business and income. We met again at one of my pools for Nick to put together my business audit. I received it and then the first Covid-19 lockdown “hit” us. During this time, he has kept in touch bouncing ideas past me, one of which I have implemented, starting to increase our turnover. Nick then came up to Rutland to help me run through a new venture I was interested in, showing me an even and balanced opinion to help me to reach the decision that it wasn’t a good venture to pursue. Since then, during the next two lockdowns, he’s been in regular contact, making suggestions for me both from a business and personal development view.
He’s always available to run ideas past, and a great support, I’m excited about the future for me as a person, business owner and swim teacher. I would not hesitate to recommend Nick to anyone as a business advisor and personal mentor and look forward to working with him for many years!

The Results
Making Waves
Katie is now in a position where, once the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions are lifted, she will be able to double her previous income plus add in two new income streams one from the sale of her book and the other through her online tutoring. Katie will also be in a position to take on another swimming teacher to support her growth and release Katie to work more on her business.
Plans for the future
As a result of our successful highly focused and sustainable interventions through the Insight360 programme, we will continue to support Katie with her ventures and the development of the Rutland Swim Academy via monthly catch ups.
